چکیده
Golgi reported an " internal reticular apparatus " in neurons — a structure now known as the Golgi apparatus. Although this is by far his best-remembered work, Golgi made many other important scientific discoveries in his lifetime (1843–1926), and in 1906 shared the Nobel prize for Physiology or Medicine with Santiago Ramón y Cajal for their studies on the structure of the nervous system. As well as the Golgi apparatus, Golgi described the relationships of glial cells with blood vessels, two fundamentally different types of nerve cell (now called projection neurons and interneurons), and the sensory organs known as 'Golgi tendon organs'. A collection of his publications — complete with his beautifully detailed drawings (samples of which are shown at top left) — were compiled to produce the four volumes of the Opera Omnia (Hoepli Editore, Milan).
